getting to the fun part...

so, i spent a good chunk of this weekend working out some things in ableton. my new mix is probably about 3/4 of the way to being done. also, i've been putting more thought into how i work with the software. ableton never ceases to amaze me with regards to how open-ended and yet easy to use it is.

i'd say i should be ready to perform live by the beginning of april. the types of things i will be able to do will have all the advantages of picking records from a crate, but still access all the advanced features that ableton has to offer. i will be able to put sets together in real time, like a dj does, so i can respond to the crowd and move the set in a direction that is appropriate. however, i will be able to mix things in a way that couldn't be done with vinyl, or even with torq or serrato. this new style requires a bit of 'prep work' when playing a track for the first time, but those settings can be saved with the file so any time i pull it up after that it will be ready to drop in to the mix. i've also been doing a few neat things with controller programming to make sure that all the parameters i need to tweak live are right at my fingertips.

i'm really excited about developing this application of ableton further. with midi implementation there is literally no end to the audio or even video sources that can be synced and improvised "on-the-fly". it's just a matter of configuring the gear and building my media library.
